The USA, as one big neighborhood

23/03/2010

There are about 300,000,000 of us in the USA, spread out over 3,794,101 sq. miles. In other words if we wanted to we could all move into and live in an area the size of New Hampshire; the 5th smallest US state (8,968 sq. miles) with extra room for more more parks.

Love it! After living in Korea, where as much as 70% of land is mountainous and not immediately suitable for urban development, I became a fan of dense cities as a way of protecting the natural environment.

As intriguing as it sounds, I wonder if we’d be willing to live in a USA like that. The environmental side of us would love to see the replenishment of our country’s ecology, but I think most people would balk at a Brooklyn the size of New Hampshire. :)

I’ve always wondered if we could do something similar by relocating the world’s population to, say, Africa and replenishing the rest of the world…

And really, if we all lived in NH, NH wouldn’t be so cool, but still, this is awesome: http://bit.ly/96ijuQ)

We should certainly be able to pull all of the people out of the desert SouthWest as the water runs out and relocate them to states not impacted by drought conditions, like New Hampshire.
