Backbase was already a fast development tool for large scale development projects, now they've made it even easier to use for all professional application developers With additional user interface controls , pre-build user interface components, and new features which fix the problem of browser incompatibilities with AJAX applications.
What does all of this tech talk mean to a budding online entrepreneur? Six months ago our firm Ideacodes switched from large-scale CMS's and standard web frameworks, to Ruby on Rails, and the average cost to our clients on development projects has exponentially dropped. Web applications that once cost six figures plus, now are in the five figure range. The reason is simple. Less development time, pre-built modules, and built in user interface components. All of which Backbase addresses in it's new release. This is a great argument for Web 2.0 as a business decision. It gives you a much higher ROI, as your initial investment is lower, and your develpment time is faster, so you don't lose opportuity costs by waiting to go to market.
OK, back to the geek stuff. Backbase 3.1.1 added many cool features for both designers and developers. They have updated the application layer, and the component layer.
In the component layer they have added:
- Data Grid: view and edit tabular date
- Live Grid: scroll through large data sets
- Paging Controls: split up large data sets across multiple pages
- Populate Event: lazy loading of data
- System Skin: create applications with a desktop look-and-feel
"The applications layer we've improved drag-and-drop and resizing functionality. This makes it easier to implement complex user interface concepts, and makes it much easier to use desktop UI concepts in web interfaces". In all this was a very complete release with more functionally than the, "version number implies".

I tried to download backbase but I got an “unsupported browser” error using Safari.

On the Mac you can use Firefox or Camino to access the Backbase site and download the Community Edition. Safari still has a couple of nasty bugs, so we had to fix those first (we’ve contributed some code to the Safari open-source project). So Safari will be supported soon
