Windy but awesome day at HMB

Windy but awesome day at HMB

Had a windy but nice surf today at HMB Jetty with Emily. Everywhere was blown out by the wind today except the Jetty. We got there about three hours after low tide and people at the north end were getting some nice green waves.

We went a bit south to catch some reforms. The swell period was awesome and the whitewater was great. I caught a bunch of awesome rides on my 9.0 and Emily also caught a bunch of waves on her superfish. We both had a great time!

REGIONAL SUMMARY: WNW(290-315) groundswell mixes with NW windswell and SSW energy for decent surf in the shoulder-head high+ range. Light wind early for generally clean conditions. Things become a bit drained as the tide drops to a negative low around mid-morning. Look for waves heights to …

My First Standing Right

My First Standing Right

We had a sunny day at the Jetty with lots of good vibes in the lineup. The sets were coming in at about 10 minute intervals and the rights were going off so we finally decided to head down to the north end. Wow, what a difference a few hundred yards can make.

Emily sat on her board for a while, and then caught an awesome wave and landed a great drop! Then she rode it all the way to the beach. Stoked!

I stood up a few times in the wash and then decided to try a right. I tried to spot where the wave was breaking and lined myself up. A few minutes later I was in a perfect spot and paddled into the wave at an angle to the right. I caught the wave popped up and rode it …

Shutout at the Jetty

Shutout at the Jetty

We were going to work today, however, we got news from two of our friends that the Jetty was going off, so we packed up and headed south. We got there just as the surf was transitioning from high to low tide, and the sets looked pretty good at the north end. In fact the surf look a bit too big for us as we are currently transitioning to shorter boards. We decided to stay a little south of the main peaks as the waves look a bit more manageable.

The surf seemed way more powerful than we’d seen at the Jetty so far. I was getting tossed around pretty well and took a few on the head. Every time I tried to stand up there seemed to be a foamy churning mess under my board. I never got to my …

Foggy Day and Short Rides

Foggy Day and Short Rides

Emily, and I had another small but fun day at the HMB Jetty. It was very foggy at HMB today, but I actually love surfing in the fog. The waves were small but there was enough force behind them to get up on the SB a few times today.

My next big move is to head to the north end and start to try to catch some nice rights. There was only one other surfer down there and I wish I had just gone for it. Maybe tomorrow if it’s not too big.

Regional Summary: A small new mix of NW-WNW(285-310) mid-period swell and building SW(210-220) Southern Hemi swell are on tap this morning as some small/leftover NW windswell is in the mix. Most breaks have knee-waist-chest high surf, with standout NW exposures pulling in a …

Fastest Surf Session Ever

Fastest Surf Session Ever

We haven’t surfed in two days and really needed to get out today. The problem was we slept a bit too late and I had an afternoon root canal scheduled and work afterwards. What did all this mean to our surf session? 20 minutes to surf and 80 minutes of driving to HMB. Also, we arrived at dead-on low tide and the surf was maybe a foot. You know what? It was still worth it.

I still managed to get to my feet a few times on the shortboard for some short, but fun rides. I’m finding I can ride the new board on very small waves. This seems strange for a 6.8, but it’s working.

Regional Summary: A small, sloppy mix of old/fading NW windswell and trace SW-SSW swell continues this morning. Most breaks have …

Surfing With Emily on Our Anniversary

Surfing With Emily on Our Anniversary

Even though we’ve been together for 17 years today was our 1st wedding anniversary, international surfing day and fathers day. This all made for an awesome, and very special surf session. Plus we had a windy, but beautifully sunny day at Half Moon Bay.

On top of everything else this was my best day surfing on my shortboard. Things really started to click today. Once again, I was just hanging on the outside of the whitewater, however, I caught and stood up on several waves for a significant time. I even caught two waves that Emily and I were both standing on at the same time. Super stoked! At this stage in the shortboard game even small steps seem huge. Also, we met another JT surfer today that we had seen several times recently. Nice to meet you Janice!

BTW, happy anniversary …

First Surf Session in 72 Hours

First Surf Session in 72 Hours

I guess you know when you’re getting hooked when 72 hours of not surfing feels like an eternity. Having not surfed since Sunday I can tell you I’m hooked. We must start getting up earlier so we can surf every day possible. Emily and I both started to feel a little strange and detached after 3 days.

Anyway today was awesome! The surf conditions were fairly good when we got there. Some nice rights and several shortboarders ripping it. We headed down the beach south a bit to keep practicing on the new boards.

My progress on the shortboard is slow, however, I feel like I’m making progress every day. My problem today was getting my hands off the board when I pop up. I need to make my pop up faster. That’s the goal for the next week. I did catch …

Where’s My Shortboard?

Where’s My Shortboard?

This was the question I was asking myself all day. It was a perfect day to practice the SB, however, it was sitting at home. I had a good time yesterday on the 9.6 tugboat, but I was looking forward to the SB today. I’ll just have to chalk this one up to bad weather forecasting. It seemed like today would be too small so I brought the 9.0. As it turns out today would have been perfect for the SB.

Anyway, we did have another awesome sunny surf session at the HMB Jetty. There were only a few other surfers out, and while the rights were very short there was still some excellent whitewater to be had. We both had some nice rides and we both went through the spin cycle once. We also had an entire sandbar to …

Logjammin’ at HMB

Logjammin’ at HMB

Just for clarification the title means riding my 9.6 not the Jackie Treehorn movie from the Big Lebowski. :) Anyway, Emily and I had the most awesome day today at the HMB Jetty. The surf was small but the weather was warm sunny and perfect. After living in California for just over 5 years now this was one of my favorite weather days ever.

While the surf was small today we still had a great time. One thing that we have both noticed is that we both feel as if we’re improving at the Jetty. This is the same way we feel when we’re surfing in Oahu. Almost every day I learn something new. This is the exact opposite of Linda Mar where I felt I learned little or nothing.

We both caught non-breaking waves today which is something we’ve been working …

Sunny and Windy Surf at the HMB Jetty

Sunny and Windy Surf at the HMB Jetty

We got to the Jetty around 1 pm which turned out to be a bit late for the good stuff. It was a beautiful sunny and warm day, however, the wind was picking up the entire time we were there. This made for less than ideal surf conditions. The wind was about 17 kits, but it was kind of fun to have the spray hit me in the back of the head when I was sitting on my board on the outside a few feet from the break zone.

While I didn’t catch any rides today I did get to experience something on the shortboard I hadn’t before. When we first got there I paddled to the outside with the hopes of catching a real ride. I sat on my board for about five minutes watching the waves and then a …
