Small but Awesome Day at HMB

Small but Awesome Day at HMB

The waves were rather small but fun at the Jetty today. Emily and I got there right between low and high tide hoping for some awesome rights. Unfortunately the rights didn’t show up until we were leaving. Still the whitewater was good for both of us still getting used to our new boards.

I’m starting to feel more confident in the whitewater with the shortboard. I’m still not at the point where I’m catching an riding every wave, but it’s getting better every day. Emily is catching almost every wave on her 7.3 Super Fish. We both feel the Jetty is making all the difference on a daily basis now.

I got two very short rides today, but one was from the outside and I caught the wave just before it broke. I was leaning up as far as I could and …

Surfing Alone at the HMB Jetty

Surfing Alone at the HMB Jetty

Condition weren’t ideal today as the western winds were kicking up, and the waves were so so. Still I got to my feet twice which felt awesome. Emily said she could see me leaning up more on my board today which really helps with the pop-up and the ride.

As we got down to the beach there were three other surfers in the water, however, it turns out they were all leaving just as we got there. This meant we had the entire Jetty to ourselves! After surfing Linda Mar in Nor Cal and Canoes in Oahu I found the feeling of surfing by ourselves was one of the most awesome things ever. It was crazy fun, and I was very stoked.

Again, Emily caught more rides than I could count on her Superfish. This seems like the perfect board for her …

First Standing Ride on the Shortboard

First Standing Ride on the Shortboard

Emily and I went back to the HMB Jetty today for another awesome surf session. The tide was rising and the surf conditions were decent.

I did a lot of reading last night on how to catch a wave on a shortboard and it really helped. It seems that I wasn’t close enough to the tip of my board and I wasn’t leaning up enough. It doesn’t sound like much but these two tips made all of the difference in making the pop-up.

As I paddled for my second wave I was much closer to the tip of the board an my back was arched as far as I could arch it. To my total surprise I stood up and caught the wave standing up. I was in the whitewater but the feeling was there and is now ingrained in my head. …

Another Fun Day at the HMB Jetty

Another Fun Day at the HMB Jetty

It was a bit foggier, but the surf conditions were still decent today at the Jetty. There was a good mix of shortboarders and longboarders at the break today and lots of rides for everyone. We were a little south of the main peaks, but we had the break mostly to ourselves.

Emily brought her 7.3 Superfish and I brought my 6.8 Firewire. Emily caught a number of rides and even scored a turn at the end. I’m still getting used to the SB. I got to my knees several times, but never got both feet on the board. I think I’m going to go a bit further out and more to the north next time.

Anyway, I had a great time and I’m still loving HMB.

Reaffirmation Day at the HMB Jetty

Reaffirmation Day at the HMB Jetty

The forecast looked good today so we finally decided to head to HMB for an afternoon surf session. As we arrived at the parking lot we were greeted by a warm sunny day, decent conditions and a positive vibe.

Emily and I have been surfing for about 10 months now and most of that time was spent at Linda Mar. We’ve also spent about 6 weeks surfing in Oahu during this time. Oahu has always been the place where our surfing went up a level or at least we always seem to learn something new there. Our time at Linda Mar has been the exact opposite of that. We’ve spent a lot of time sitting on our boards or getting beat up on the inside. We never seem to learn much there. So today we decided to change that and start …
