It Looked Great and Then it Got Terrible

It Looked Great and Then it Got Terrible

When we first pulled into the parking lot the conditions looked pretty good for Linda Mar. 3 to 5 foot surf and lots of ridable corners. It seemed like everyone was getting nice rides down the line. By the time we took pictures and suited up it was only about twenty minutes later. But how fast the conditions changed was amazing. By the time we hit the water everything was jacking up and closing out. We tried in the middle by the pump house for a while, but it was unridable. We finally headed south to the boat docks and got a few short rides before the sun set. All in all it was better than not getting wet at all.

Another Windy Day at Linda Mar

Another Windy Day at Linda Mar

When we got to the parking lot at Linda Mar this morning the wind was really blowing. On the plus side it was sunny and there were only a handful of surfers in the water so you could pretty much pick your spot. Emily and I headed down to the boat docks and sat on the beach watching the waves for a few minutes. An older guy walked by with his dog and said, “you guy must be desperate”. That’s sort of sums up the conditions today. We headed out anyway and caught some awesome long whitewater waves and at the end we really didn’t want to to leave. I guess surfing is whatever you want it to be at any given time. We almost always seem to have a good time.

Almost Dawn Patrol

Almost Dawn Patrol

If you’ve read my surf journal, or know me you’re aware that I never get up early. Today my wife and I are starting to change that once and for all. We’ve known since we started surfing a bit over a year ago that dawn was usually the best time to go. Walled up lines, clean surf and little or no wind. We’ve always let our work schedule dictate our sleeping habits. We are now entering a new era of controlling our schedule for surf priorities. This means up early from now on.

We got there a bit less than an hour after sunrise and we’re greeted with cold, windy (16 to 33 MPH) and rainy conditions. For some reason the waves looked fairly clean at the north end. They were also too big for us. We stayed to the middle …

Hiatus Over

Hiatus Over

We’ve been hella busy with work the last month and haven’t got to surf once, so getting back in the water today was awesome. Emily and I headed to Linda Mar as we were a bit short on time today. The outside was filled with peeps waiting for what seemed to be all close outs, so we stayed on the inside for some tiny fun ones. We both caught our fill and had a great stoked smile time.

PM Regional Overview: Old WNW swell continues to fade as some new WNW mid period swell moves in this afternoon. Most breaks are offering some pretty solid surf, unfortunately conditions continue to be uncooperative with steady WSW winds. Most breaks are seeing surf in the shoulder-head high+ range, with top WNW spots offering up 2-3′+ overhead waves, …

Be Careful Out There

Be Careful Out There

As I was having tea this morning I twittered, “Should I start work this fine Monday morning or go surfing? Hum…”. My first response was from a trusted nor cal surfing friend which said, “Do you really have to ask?! :-) It’s big, be careful out there.” Afterwords, I checked my other nor cal surf friend and another also said at the end of their twitter post, “Be safe out there.” I knew it was going to be a bit bigger than my comfort limit today, but as usual I didn’t really care and we headed out.

As we pulled into the parking lot at LM we could see that the predicted swell had started filling in. We got suited up and headed to the beach to take a closer look.

We started chatting with some dude on our way to …

Sunny Chill Surf at Linda Mar

Sunny Chill Surf at Linda Mar

As usual Emily and I got to the break a bit late, however, it turned out to be the perfect time for us to surf. We haven’t been going very regularly so we felt a bit out of shape. We got to LM a an hour before low tide, but the waves weren’t closing out at several spots up and down the beach. We got suited up and headed out to an empty spot in the middle. We both got an immediate pay off and caught our first two waves in about 10 minutes. I was on my 6.8 and Emily was on her 7.3 Superfish. To my surprise I got several nice drops and standing rides. It’s been a while since I’ve been out on the 6.8, but it felt great. Awesome day!

Back in the Water in NorCal

Back in the Water in NorCal

After almost a month off Emily and I finally got back in the water again. As we pulled into the parking lot at Linda Mar it was shrouded in fog and the waves were small but consistent. After we suited up we headed to the beach to check out the wave and the sets. It seemed like all of the longboarders were getting wave after wave. They were small but were peeling right and left at several different spots. The surf forecasts was poor but I would give it a fair, especially for longboarders. We both managed to catch several nice rides even after being off for so long. We both had a great time and are looking forward to surfing more consistently for the foreseeable future. Stoked!

SW Wind + SW Groundswell

SW Wind + SW Groundswell

Because of the above listed conditions we were told by a friend via Twiiter that everything was blown out south of Linda Mar. So, we head to LM. When we got to the parking lot the conditions looked awesome. Lefts, rights and a-frames everywhere. By the time we got in the water everything had turned to mush. I tried for a couple of promising looking waves but they all mushed out. It turned out to be a fairly short session.

However, by the time we were leaving an hour later the conditions were back on. Should have hung outside for another hour. I guess you live and learn.

Surfing With the Dolphins

Surfing With the Dolphins

When we got to the parking lot around 4:30 pm high tide had just crested and the surf looked pretty good for Linda Mar. The swell was from the south in the waist to shoulder high range, and the winds were light. All things considered fairly good conditions at LM. Also, this was the first time since last fall that I surfed without my gloves or hood. It felt really liberating to not be wearing them.

There were a lot of surfers catching shoulders from the pump house to the north end. While I didn’t catch any meaningful waves I did get to sit on the outside with a playful pod of dolphins. If you’ve been surfing a long time you’ve probably surfed with dolphins nearby many times. For myself and Emily this was our first time. Along with the dolphins …

Back on the Shortboard in NorCal

Back on the Shortboard in NorCal

I know I said I wouldn’t go back to Linda Mar, however, today looked like it might be a nice shortboard day there. And it was.

It’s been a very busy and intense three weeks since we got back from Oahu. We haven’t had anytime to surf at all. As of today this is going to change. We’re committed to surfing as much as we possibly can from this point forward. Anyway back to today’s sesh.

We had a sunny warm morning at Linda Mar with a rising high tide. As we pulled into the parking lot I saw many surfers with shortboards which made me glad I had brought mine today. I figured with all of those shortboards it was either the annual shortboard kookfest, or I was a good day to surf one. As it turns out maybe it was …
